how to become an active listener in 5 steps

Listen Up! 5 Keys to Active Listening

The worst thing to do if you are in a forum or conference meeting, even with a friend, is to keep occupying yourself with answers and how to respond correctly, worrying about their reactions. I guarantee you that if you do this, you will lose your chance to learn and opportunities to establish great relationships. I was doing that. But now that I am more aware of active listening, I do try to improve this important skill day by day.

There are a few tips to become an effective listener:

  1. Body language

A large percentage of human communication is not verbal. Therefore, you have to show your speaker sings that you are interested in their talking by making eye contact, maintaining an open body posture, stopping using your phone, or putting headphones on even if you stop what you are playing (music, podcasts, etc.).

  1. Open your eyes

In other words, pay attention to the surroundings and the speaker's emotional state. This gives you information about how you can respond to him later, but for now, just listen and pay attention to what he is saying.

  1. Give feedback

Send your speaker signs that you really care, signs like (yes, right, thats true) in some scenarios, like if you find yourself in some conference or meeting, you can just humming or chacking your head. That will definitely encourage your speaker to continue because you care about what he says.

  1. Your turn

When he finishes, it is your turn to respond. You cannot just be silent; otherwise, you are wasting all this effort. It is important to respond, and you can do that by asking a good question or with a short phrase. But never make it long if it is not necessary or required because we don't want to steal the show from our speaker or transform the topic of conversation.

  1. Keep it up

Meaning that when you come across the speaker the next day, ask him about updates and what's new. This is the first step toward networking. I guarantee you that anyone you ask, whether an entrepreneur, politician, or employee, will tell you that networking is an asset. For example, after the class is over, I go to my teacher and ask him/her about the subject, sharing my opinion This helped me to establish a sustainable relationship with my teachers even after graduation.
